It is commonly thought that it is possible to tell when a horse is dehydrated by looking at it, that may be so but only after 4 to 5% of the body weight in fluid has already been lost can dehydration be detected by skin elasticity. In the 500KG horse this which represents some 20 Kg of fluid so it is prudent to always supply some extra sodium levels above that which is naturally contained in the forage and other feeds. Levels do not have to be precise. Appetite for salt can vary quite widely even between siblings. Western salts helps to ensure horses and ponies drink normally When fed everyday feeding a 25 ml spoonful per day in conjunction with good quality forage usually provides sufficient Sodium per day for the inactive 400-500Kg Bodyweight horse in winter. For the more active horse in summer feed extra sodium & potassium in the form of an electrolyte (Electros) and with any pronounced sweating.
