In the healthy horse, the lower intestinal tract will “balance” itself with near equal populations of both beneficial and harmless bacteria but when disease – producing pathogens proliferate and gain predominance, all too often this result is intestinal imbalance and a disease condition. It has long been observed that any adverse situation causing a metabolic upset to horses in whatever form often results in the harbouring of increased levels of harmful coliform bacteria in the intestinal tract well before clinical symptoms of disease appear. There are two basic categories of natural occurring micro-organisms functioning within the digestive system, namely the beneficial, non-pathogenic micro-organisms, comprising mainly of lactic acid producing species and the potentially pathogenic micro-organisms, particularly the coliform groups such as E. Coli and pathogenic Enterococci which cause disease problems. The optimum growth of pathogenic groups of micro-organisms within the intestine is pH dependant. A neutral pH climate is equally favourable for both groups, a pH of 6 is optimum for the growth of Lactobacillus and other lactic acid producing types, with the optimum range for E. Coli and other pathogenic bacteria is pH 8 to 9. Some Lactobacillus species (including Strain M74) are so successful in production of lactic acid in an endeavour to maintain a favourable environment for themselves that extreme natural secretion of acid by the stomach can be beneficially suppressed (as in cases of acidosis). All stressful situations to which the horse is exposed contribute towards an increase in intestinal pH and they are thereby likely to favour the development of pathogenic species such as E. Coli and pathogenic Enterococcus at the expense of beneficial species.
Types and numbers (per gram fresh weight contents) of micro-organisms in various sections of the gastro-intestinal tract of the horse vary considerably Enterococci bacteria are prevalent in the hind portion of the gut that encourages essential fibre digestion.
Bile Salts, produced within the liver are surface-active chemicals which aid digestion by forming polymolecular aggregates with water-insoluble lipids and fat-soluble vitamins. Bile is instrumental in blocking the passage of many live organisms into the lower intestine. Specific strains of lactobacilli (including Strain M74) can liberate free bile acids in the intestinal tract and consequently influence the balance of bacteria present within the gut. Hence a reason for feeding Trinity L94, which effectively stimulates bile production, in cases of intestinal upset.
Probiotics such as LACTIFERM CAPSULES are not medicines and should perhaps be considered as nutrients. The objective when feeding Probiotics is for beneficial organisms to dominate the harmful. It must be remembered that although the protection of gut micro flora begins within 2 hours from feeding, optimum protection is not established until approximately 30 hours after commencement of feeding.
For Foals – Intestinal balance sickens and kills more new-born foals than any other foal-hood affliction. Beginning with its passage through the latter half of the birth canal, the foetus-foal is bombarded with many kinds of disease-producing organisms, then shortly after birth it is confronted by a second microscopic brew. FOALS – PrEvent Probiotic Powder– Feed 2 x 25ml Spoonfuls (spoon provided with powder) for the first 3 days of life by Oral doser then 1 Spoonful (25ml spoon) per day in milk replacer or top-dressed on to creep feed
ADULTS – PrEvent Probiotic Powder – During times of stress (showing, working, breeding etc) feed one to two spoonfuls once or twice per day (50 to 100g daily) with feed. Background to PrEvent Probiotic & Lactiferm Capsules –
The origins of M-74 can be traced back to Czech Republic to a Dr Endre Kvanta who worked with Claes Olsen who was in the bee pollen business and had a good relationship with the Czech government at the time. Initial production started in the Kvanta basement; probably his wife Judit was the most responsible. Then the research attracted the attention of the Swedish based Bonnier family and specifically Uncle Albert who was a true entrepreneur who started over 100 companies. It was after he died the family decided to sell their interest in the probiotics and M-74 was embraced by world recognition in all forms of livestock. M-74 was first isolated from the gut of a particularly healthy human baby and was first named Streptococcus faecium then changed to Enterococcus faecium to be better categorised with European legislation.
